From the BBC - What makes a homegrown player?
A homegrown player is a player who, regardless of their nationality or age, has been affiliated with any English or Welsh club for a period of three entire seasons or 36 months before their 21st birthday.
The same rules apply to players who have three seasons or 36 months as a registered player prior to the end of the season in which that player turns 21.
The rules on this differ to Uefa’s rules on homegrown players. The qualifying period for a player only counts between the ages of 15 and 21, where as the Premier League’s starting age is much younger.

My biggest issue with that piece, and with Atkinson in general is, is there is a jump from “this is my subjective personal opinion” to “any outcomes that doesnt match with what I have said I think is needed is a result of bad planning/stupid decision making”, despite not having done any work to justify his opinion in the first place. I get having a platform means getting to have your opinion and talk about it, but…

Registering is an issue related to playing. We’re not registering them if they are staying with the club this season, and it wont be a season that counts towards their HG qualification

I’m pretty sure that before the window opened there was talk of an agreement that Wharton had with Palace with the reported price being around £70m. However, Palace saw the fees for Anderson, Tonali and especially Fernandez and saw pound signs. Liverpool were never going to match a fee of £100m in a window where MacAlister stayed.
To be fair the market has gone mad. For example, we couldn’t have sold Gakpo last year for anywhere near what we can this summer. I get what you are saying but apparently a lot can change in 12 months.

I don’t agree with all Neil’s stuff, and he certainly has a tendency to drive his point home to the point of exhaustion. But I can’t see an issue with this bit you’ve quoted.
Neil has a general mistrust of Liverpool getting embroiled in sagas. His reservations over the Isak pursuit were never the player, but the pursuit itself, and the damage that caused to the club as a result. And he is right that when you have advance notice there is going to be a massive hole in the squad from six months out, then that really shouldn’t be turning into a saga.
I think it’s pretty evident that Liverpool’s approach to the last two summers has been ‘who are the best players we can get, and we’ll figure out how to make this work later’. That might pay off long term, but I don’t think it’s the way, or in fact most teams, would go about squad building.

And if his point was “we should have got a result on this earlier given how important it is” then I dont agree with it, because big things are often not as simple as that, but ok I get that as a desire. But that wasnt even his point. It was that us still trying to find solutions now (which in one reading arent even the Mo replacement solutions if you take the holistic view of BB being the Mo replacement) is evidence of us not having started work on this early enough, which is just simply bollocks.
But the biggest point is you are I are just idiots on the internet. Neil is an idiot on the internet with a BIG platform. His idiocy is more worth of criticism than ours is.

This stuff we’re feeding the press about Barcola being our last signing of this window seems to be a transparent attempt to see if Brighton or Palace will come down on their valuations before the window shuts. If they do, we sell Gakpo to City and make that move. If they don’t, we keep Cody and carry on.

Exactly.
I appreciate it´s a concern but that´s why you make up for it with a player next to him who is more dynamic. Top class passers are often slower.
I suppose we could go for somebody ideally like Thiago who was agile (although not exactly dynamic)
