There’s no right or wrong feeling here. Different people feel different things, have different opinions, and that’s perfectly fine. There’s no reason to argue. And I also believe that no one has the right to tell me or us how we should feel.
It’ll take me a while to deal with this. I knew it was going to happen, but now that we know, it’s different.
To be honest, I find the number of excellent players they’ve signed on a free over the last few seasons quite staggering. I think Alphonso Davies was the only one who rejected them when his contract was so close to running out.
I think that is slightly different as Gini wanted to stay but he and the club couldnt agree terms - with the perception that Edwards was being a little harsh with the terms he offered.
Their earning power is twice ours which probably helps.
Am I bitter for suggesting it’s not (just) financial power and prestige enticing big names to join Real Madrid on a free? I would genuinely like to know if they would have bought TAA had Liverpool quoted them 80 million pounds.
So in the end his contract ended and he left.
One thing I’d put my house on, he’s never getting his coveted Ballon D’or playing for that shower.
I’d lmao if the new manager “just doesnt fancy him”
Its statements like this which i find funny doesn’t matter to us anymore.
Correct.
But it would amuse me
Yes, the prestige is also a massive factor. I would have thought if Trent asked to leave a deal could have been agreed but i dont know if he wanted too or whether RM had already committed to other deals or we demanded a higher fee than RM would pay.
The suggestion that RM can plan these deals 4-5 years in advance is quite impressive and to their advantage.
Right, but the criticism is not so much that it ended but that he chose to run it down.
I’m largely in agreement with your wider argument, but there is a clear difference between Trent’s situation and that of Gini.
Which appears rather childish.
He was fully entitled to run it down. If the club didn’t want that they could have sold him in Jan.
That has exactly what to do with this situation how.
Will be interesting to see how he performs. I am not 100% convinced he will be a success.
At Liverpool our system was created to play to his strengths. He is world class in our system, with CB/DM covering his weakneses.
Much like playing for England how will he do playing a more traditional role ? A player not bought by incoming manager. Madrid loves to have scapegoats and he could soon find himself under the spotlight.
I’m not disputing whether or not he was within his rights to run down his contract - I’m totally ok with him doing so - and I believe the club was too, I’m merely pointing out that the situations involving Gini and Trent are (perceived to be) different hence why they have attracted differing reactions from some of the fanbase despite both leaving on a free.
As for your second point, the club could only sell Trent if the player was agreeable to that.
This is all fair enough and we benefit from our stature in the world game. In the grand scheme of things we sit very close to the pinnacle of world football, so we will flex our muscles more than most.
Unfortunately Real Madrid are above us in the pecking order, probably at the very pinnacle, and we are on the other side of it with Trent.
Anyway, life goes on. Good luck to him. I’m quite sure LFC will be more than fine and I can’t wait to see how Slot shapes his team over the summer.
I dont see they are really that different. Both were offered contracts commensurate with what the club thought they could afford and what the player’s value to them was. In neither case was it enough to make the player want to sign it.
The main difference in the reaction seems to be that fans were happy for the opportunity to “upgrade” Gini
From a neutral perspective, or from that of the club, perhaps they are the same - but the discussion has mostly been about the reaction by fans, and for most of Gini’s last season many fans were quite critical of the club in not giving Gini a better deal as of our regular 3 he was the one who appeared to be available most often and there would be periods in which it would be fashionable to call him underappreciated.
I think the attitude seemed to swing against Gini when he looked to be going to Barca.
